Do you need a Content Management System?

A content management system helps organize and automate your collection, management, and publishing process. You need a content management system when this process becomes too complex to manage manually. The need for a content management system can be gauged by the amount of content you have, the amount of change in the content you have, and the number of publications you intend to create.

Estimating your organizational Content Management Complexity provides you with a guide to the necessity of deploying a content management system to address your organizational needs. Keep in mind that other needs, such as providing non-technical users with tools to easily update a small site, are also valid reasons to consider a content management solution.

This index is calculated using a formula proposed by Bob Boiko in his book, "Content Management Bible". You can find out more about content management, the book, and the formula at www.metatorial.com

Content Management Complexity Index

Authors - The number of authors contributing content.
Sources - The number of sources of content. For example printed materials, information feeds from other systems etc.
Components - The number of components, or if you are not familiar with components, pages, in the system at this time. For example if you produce 20 different brochures the value is 20.
Types - The number of component types in the system. Each type typically requires a different collection, management and publication process. For example pages, files, and applications etc.
Throughput - The total number of components created, modified, archived and deleted each week.
Publications - The total number of different publications the system must create. If you produce a printed brochure, a CD-ROM, a web page, and a newsletter then you have 4 types.
