Flexible Site Structure and Permissions

AssetNow NX uses a familiar tree structure of categories to manage your web site hierarchy. The tree can have an unlimited number of categories and levels. Set permissions using user groups or access links.

The site tree makes it easy to:

  • Create a site structure that corresponds with the site navigation, site layout, organizational structure, or a combination of these
  • Move and order categories in the tree as requirements change
  • Manage sites of any size due to the unlimited tree hierarchy size and depth
  • Create mini-sites within a single AssetNow NX installation
  • Set access permissions to any part of the site
  • Use permissions to display content based on region or other criteria
  • Display specific content to visitors based on site entry URLs

Tree Structure

AssetNow NX uses a tree folder structure of categories. The tree is expandable to any number of categories and depth. You can move categories within the structure as your site grows and content has to be reorganized. Link integrity is maintained after moving so there is no need to back an update any links you may have created.

Content pages are added inside categories. A category can contain any number of pages. Pages can be moved to different categories with any links remaining intact. A page can appear in multiple categories using the virtual page feature. This means you only need to maintain the master page and all virtual copies will updated accordingly.

Typically the tree structure corresponds to the site navigation with top level categories forming the primary navigation. Navigation widgets can be added to page layout templates and automatically build and update navigation based on the tree structure and user access permissions.

You can also build custom navigation solutions in which case the tree structure may reflect a different structure, such as the departments of a company, and not the site navigation.

You can exclude specific categories from the site navigation, allowing you to use certain categories as role specific/organizational publishing containers or containers for reusable content elements such as sidebar content.

Content pages are easy to order within a category. Virtual pages allow a page to appear in more than one category whilst only requiring a single master page to be published and maintained.

Permissions

AssetNow NX has a flexible permissions system based on users, groups, and roles. A user is an account used to access specific parts of the site with a valid username and password. There is a built-in anonymous user account. By default all visitors to the site are anonymous users.

All users belong to a group. The everyone group is a built-in default group all users belong to. A user may belong to multiple groups. A group allows you to set specific access modes and restrictions. When assigning access permissions to the site tree groups are easier and more efficient to manage than many individual users.

Roles are used to assign application functionality to a user. For example a Publisher is a user with access to the content publishing tool. You can enable specific application features for each role.
